Project

BRUNN is the result of my first project at Umea Institute of Design in collaboration with FM Mattsson Mora/ Mora Armatur on the topic “the experience of scandinavian water luxury”.

Main focus: User Interaction

Challenge

The Scandinavian lifestyle is an active outdoor way of living. Close to nature and ones inner self. Outdoor wellness is an important part of this lifestyle.

What if Mora would tap into this culture, creating an unique and luxurious experience by extending the wellness activities outdoors.

Result

BRUNN (swedish for well) is an outdoor shower that fits perfectly in any wellness savvy persons life. It extends the wellness experience to the outdoors. Ideal for people who own a sauna or other wellness related equipment at home. With its elegant and clean design it fit in any Scandinavian garden and its user interface makes it easy to use for anyone. Extending your outdoor wellness experience.

The essence of Scandinavian water luxury
The quest

What is the link between water and Scandinavia? How does luxury fit in all this?

The chosen direction

OutdoorWellness

What if Mora could extend the wellness experience outdoors?

Interaction Ideation

Using it on paper

The first ideas focussed mainly on a digital type of dial interface for which I created a rough wireframe. After reflecting on the direction it didn’t feel right to have a digital interface in the garden for a wellness experience where water is the main attribute arround it while in use,

The interaction should represent a ritual or activity which is mostly analog and pure and as much away from technology as possible.

Clean and focussed

As most wellness and outdoor spa activities are mainly focussed arround traditions and purity to revive ones body and soul we choose to go for a pure and analog control supported by light for feedback. Making a little step towards technology only to be able to keep the interaction interface as simple as possible.

Rotate the shower knob to adjust the temperature before you turn it on, the led ring will indicate the temperature by changing its color as you turn the know now simply press that same button to start the shower OR simply hit the buttun from the getgo for a quick refreshing and ice cold shower after your sauna session.

As Scandinavia is also known for its fresh and clean natural drinking water a water tap outlet needed to be implemented to lessen that thirst after a great spa session.

Return to sender

While wellness is verymuch linked to nature and ones surroundings the topic of sustainability feels naturally at place in this area. Preventing the used water from just draining away and possibly ending up in the ground, a reservoir with active filtering capacity will collect this water and recycle it for re-use, Saving on water usage and the environment. The outer ring is there to prevent any “dirty” water from the soil to enter the reservoir and pollute the filtering unit and is therefore drained away.

All senses activated

Your wellness activities don’t stop once you come out of the sauna, it is extended with the Mora BRUNN. As soon as you step onto the base plate you will feel the massaging structure underneeth your feet while at the same time activating the shower by stepping on it. Close your eyes, let that water sinse your body and enjoy the feet massage while at it.
